    About this item

An original British Army officer's private purchase khaki beret which dates from the Second World War.

This hat belonged to Hugh Charles Bouttell who was an officer in the 666 Artisan Workshop Company, Royal Engineers. At the beginning of the war he was a 2nd Lieutenant but was quickly made up to Captain by early 1940. He went out to France in April 1940 and then Iceland in 1941.

The beret is typical of wartime officer's examples. It is made from a khaki brown coloured wool felt and features a separate headband. Two green painted grommets are fitted to one side which act as vents and the interior is lined with a golden coloured rayon material. It is fitted with an original King's crown officer's Royal Engineers cap badge. Inside the hat the original maker's label is still present although it is no longer legible.

The overall condition is good with signs of service wear and age. It displays well but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-owned item which has some flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original example with guaranteed WW2 history.
