About this item
For sale is a WW2 Sub Lieutenant: A Personal Record of the War at Sea By Ludovic Kennedy, 1st Edition Publication/ Book with the original dust cover. This was published in 1942.
This book is the record of a very young man's two years of active service in a Destroyer Flotilla of the Home Fleet, and is one of the first of its kind to be written by a naval officer in the present war. touches briefly on his early life at Eton and Oxford, and on his period of training for the R.N.V.R.: but It the body of it deals with destroyers life in destrovers, with vivid deseriptions, often illustrated by his own photographs, of actions and events in the war at sea, such as the Battle of Norway, the Lofoten Raid. the sinking of the Bismarck, the Spitzbergen Expedition, the Atlantie Charter Meeting, bombing attacks by enemy aircraft, and other ineidents of Atlantic and North Sea patrols and convoys. It is simply and sincerely written, and gives, we believe, as acute an insight into the make-up and reactions of young naval officer as does its counterpart, Fighter Pilot, into those of a young airman. A moving section pays a tribute to the author's father who, as Captain of the Rawalpindi, was lost in the first, and one of the most gallant, naval actions of this war an action which is poignantly re constructed from the accounts of survivors.
