    Killed in action Military Medal (MM) and pair awarded to C-6847 Pte J H Such 18th Btn KRRC.

    John Henry Such was born in Ingrave, Essex, a 21 year old milkman residing at 50 Hamilton Road, Heath Park, Romford, Essex he attested for the 18th (Arts and Crafts) Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Heath Park 16th August 1915 and served in France from the 2nd May 1916. Wounded in action 28/2/1917, he was treated at No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station and appears to have returned to duty some days later.

    On 28/2/1917 ‘A’ and ‘B’ companies 18th Battalion KRRC were in Voormezeele when they were heavily shelled, 2 other ranks were killed and 1 officer and 7 other ranks (including Such) were wounded.

    Awarded the Military Medal London Gazette 16th August 1917 page 8425.

    The Battalion War Diary announced the award of the Military Medal to Rifleman Such on 29th June 1917, an award for the attack on the Messines / Wyschaete launched at 03:10 hours on 14/6/1917, the battalion moving forward in support of the 122ND Infantry Brigade and at 06:20 hours advanced in Artillery formation towards the Damstrasse, thence to the German second line which was reached at 06:45 hours. The operation was a complete success, 7000 prisoners and 20 guns being captured, Battalion subject to a great deal of shell fire and withdrew at 22:00 hours to Old French Trench having suffered 18 other ranks killed and 30 wounded.

    Admitted to No 138 Field Ambulance RAMC with concussion 31/7/1917 (almost certainly the result of an exploding Artillery shell) received on the opening day of the Thired Battle of Ypres, the Battle of Pilckem Ridge. After a period of convalescence locally, he re-joined his battalion 8/8/1917, he was killed in action 21/9/1917 aged 23 years. He is remembered with Honour at Hooge Crater Cemetery.
