About this item
An original World War One era British War Medal, with length of replacement ribbon. Suspension is very slightly slack.
18-1160 PTE. J. NEWTON. W. YORK R.
The Medal Index Card confirms John Newton was entitled to a Pair. Also stated is "P.D. 14.7.16", which is an abbreivation of 'Presumed Dead'. Soldiers Died shows John was serving with the 18th Battalion.
Whilst John is commemmorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial at Ypres, before and around the 14th July, the 18th Battalion was on the Somme at this time. I believe he was serving with the 12th Battalion at the time (confirmed on medal rolls), who strangely were also on the Somme. On the 14th an attack is recorded on Bazentin-le-Grand Wood. I am not sure why John is recorded on the memorial at Ypres, rather than Thiepval.
