    About this item

The sword of Frank Derek Ironside Wood (1908-1986)

Brief research shows that Wood reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, being promoted "Maj. F. D. I. WOOD (39212) to be Lt.-Col., 30th June 1950" Published in The London Gazette of Friday, 2nd March, 1951.

Colonel Wood served with the 3rd (Martinique) Field Battery, Royal Artillery, during the 1930's.

He died in Melton, Suffolk aged 78 in 1986.

The sword by Wilkinson of Pall Mall, in good untouched condition, housed it its leather field service leather scabbard complete with brown leather knot.

Plated three bar hilt with some plating loss. Shagreen grip complete and undamaged, retaining all of its original silver twistwire.

Housed in brown leather carry case, stamped "Wilkinson Sword" and carrying the initials "F.D.I.W."

The 34.5 inch blade carried the original owners initials "F.D.I.W." the words "Royal Artillery" as well as the usual floral etching. Blade with some staining, old grease, dirt and light rust. It would greatly benefit from some gentle cleaning to bring it back to its original glory.

A very good sword, with research potential.

    Strictly over 18's only.
