About this item
An original American made flying helmet by 'Karl Ort' which dates from the 1930s.
This helmet is typical of those purchased in the inter-war and early war period by flyers in the United States. It was made by 'Karl Ort' of York, Pennsylvania who was a prolific mail order business for flying clothing selling through catalogues. The exterior of the helmet is made from a chestnut brown leather and features earpieces to which gosport tubes can be fitted. a chin strap fastens with a plated metal buckle and twin goggle straps are present to the rear. The interior of the helmet is fully lined in chamois leather and the original maker's label is still present and features a graphic of a bi-plane. Below this is the size tag which reads 6 7/8.
The helmet is in good condition for its age and displays well. There are some signs of wear and age as can be seen in the pictures.
A nice example of this hard to find pattern of high quality early flying helmet which would make a great addition to any aviation collection!
