About this item
An original brown leather flying helmet made in Great Britain during the 1930s.
This style of helmet was extremely popular with the RAF as well as with civilian flyers during the inter-war period. This example is an interesting design which is similar to those made by 'D. Lewis' and 'S. Lewis' but is of notably different construction.
The helmet features a chestnut brown coloured chromed leather exterior and rayon lining to the interior. It features ear flaps which fasten with press studs which are designed to house the receiver sections of the Gosport Tubes. A leather chin strap is also present and this fastens with a single prong metal button. All of the press studs are early Newey examples which are marked 'Newey Brothers LTD'.
The helmet comes complete with a set of Gosport Tubes which appear to be original to it. Gosport Tubes were standard for communication during the inter-war period and the tube on this set features the War Department broad arrow marking confirming them as military issue.
The helmet is a larger size and fits a display head well. It is most likely around a size 7 1/4 and possibly larger. The overall condition of the helmet is very good with some limited signs of age and wear. It displays very well but please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
A nice example with an original military Gosport Tubes. This would make an excellent addition to any aviation collection!
