    About this item

A scarce original Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Type N Tropical flying helmet in a size 2.

These helmets are often incorrectly referred to as the Fleet Air Arm D Type helmet as they have a number of similar attributes to their RAF counterpart. The helmet is made from a tan coloured cotton drill material and features a neck flap to the rear, blue elastic chin strap strap and five leather goggle straps to the rear. The helmet is fitted with leather receiver cups which retain their original rubber inserts which have dried out meaning that they will shed if handled too aggressively. The zips are present but both have minor damage meaning they would be best left as is or restored with new zips.

The interior of the helmet is lined in an off white coloured satin, as is standard with this pattern. It has pulled away from the press studs in numerous places, as is common, and shows some other signs of wear and use. One of the exterior press studs has also started to pull through the cotton drill material as illustrated in picture 8.

The original markings are still partly visible to the exterior of the helmet (picture 11) with the 22C prefix still legible. The helmet is a size 2.

Aside from the aforementioned flaws, the helmet is in quite good condition and displays well. There is some staining and signs of wear and age, all of which is illustrated in the pictures.

One of the harder to find British flying helmets of the Second World War which could make a good addition to a helmet collection.
