    About this item

A rare example of the 1930 Pattern Flying Helmet clearly dated 1937.

The 1930 pattern proceeded the B-type flying helmet and carries many of the same characteristics and at first glance could almost be a B-Type. The construction of the crown area is the same as a B - Type and the lining and label are also very similar. It differs however in that it is longer at the back like some commonwealth B - Types and has an earlier style of chin strap.

This pattern of helmet was issued without any ear pieces like the later B - Type was. This example appears to have had ears retro-fitted at some stage which have been removed again and circular patches stitched on to cover the holes. It is common to see these helmets with a variety of different ear pieces and it would be simple to add some again if you so wished.

The exterior is in good condition for its age as can be seen in the photographs. It is far from perfect as is to be expected from an 81 year old leather item but al the stitching appears strong and it displays well. The original chin strap and leather covered buckle are both present and in good usable condition.

The interior shows signs of wear and has a section of the chamois missing but the original label has survived well and is still bright and legible. The label bares the stores code with the correct 37 suffix for the year as well a kings crown and the 1937 date. The size is also marked which in this case is No2 which fits a size 6 7/8 to 7 head.

A very rare helmet in good displayable condition with a nice clear date. This would undoubtedly compliment any RAF collection or display.
