    About this item

An original private purchase Royal Navy Ratings 'Jumper, Serge' made by 'Harveys' in the early 1950s.

It was very common for sailors to have a private purchase or 'trade' jumper to be worn as a best uniform for walking out. This example is very similar to the issue jumpers and features a two button cuff, double thickness collar and single interior pocket. Whilst dating from the 1950s these features make it an ideal stand-in for a WW2 example.

The original label is present to the interior and bears the maker's name of 'Harveys' along with the address of 344 Fratton Road Portsmouth. The style of label and the addition of a phone number is typical of the period.

These jumpers are designed to be a tight fit worn close to the body. The jumper will most likely suit a 36" chest and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 19 1/2"
    Inside arm - 20"
    Outside arm - 23"
    Shoulders - 16 3/4"
    Length - 28"

The overall condition is good although there are some signs of wear and age. There are a couple of small holes to one of the sleeves and some moth damage to the two navy blue cotton tapes. Please study the images before purchasing.

A good original 1950s private purchase top with a great label.
