    About this item

An original Royal Navy Able Seaman's Kitbag dating from 1954.

This pattern of kitbag was introduced in the inter-war period replacing the early pattern which had a rope-edged seam around the base. This pattern was still in use meaning this most likely dates from the 1940s or 1950s.

It is a large bag, much larger than used by the Army and Air Force, which is made from a tan coloured canvas. It is tubular in shape and features an integral flap which ties with string. Brass eyelets are fitted around the top of the bag which tie with a rope.

To the base of the bag the original owner's name and number have been marked. They read 'J. Walley' and 'P/K948657'.

Inside the bag the original markings are still present and bear the manufacturers initials of L. J. J.' and the 1954 date.

The bag is large and when laid flat measures -

    Height - 37"
    Width - 24 1/2"

The bag is in used condition but is sound and displays well.

    A nice original kit bag!
