GROUP OF FIVE. A.B. Richard Puxty. R.N. & R.F.R. Present at Jutland.

An interesting medal group awarded to Able Seaman Richard Puxty of His Majesties Royal Navy and later Royal Fleet Reserve seeing action at the Battle of Jutland. 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & Victory Medal (J.14674 R. PUXTY. A.B. R.N.), Royal Fleet Reserve L. S. & G.C. Medal (J14674 (PO. B. 15972) R, PUXTY. AB. R.F.R.) Arethusa & Chichester Training Ships Medal (RICHARD PUXTY). Able Seaman Richard Puxty was born on December 1895 in Battle in the county of Sussex. Enlisting with the Royal Navy as a volunteer on the 9th October 1911, commencing service 10th December 1913. Service record shows that Able Seaman Richard Puxty first service posting was with HMS Ganges and commenced 9th October 1911. Followed by two further postings until he was transferred and served aboard HMS Neptune on the 7th October 1914. Able Seaman Richard Puxty served the entire war on HMS Neptune which saw action at the Battle of Jutland.  Her Majesty’s Ship Neptune was one of the new Dreadnought class battleships. She was the flagship of the Home Fleet. In 1914 she was assigned to the 1st Battle Squadron. HMS Neptune was armed with 5x twin 12 inch guns as main armament with further 4 inch guns and 18 inch torpedo tubes. After the war Able Seaman Richard Puxty served another number of years until his recommendation for a transfer to the Royal Fleet Reserve on the 9th December 1925. Service records show that after serving another 10 years with the Royal Fleet Reserve he was finally discharged from service whilst based in Portsmouth. Service records show he received his British War Medal and Victory in May 1922. This was followed by the 1914-15 Star in July 1922. His award for his Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on the 5th October 1934. As part of his medal service entitlement he is also awarded the ‘England expects every man to do his duty’ medal. Awarded by Arthusa & Chichester Training Ships for 3 years service with good character record. A silver hallmarked medal. Presented by The Committee to Richard Puxty. Medal is housed in a red covered velour box with blue velvet interior. (with copy medals rolls) and (with original 1.Wax Paper Service Naval Record (S-459), 2. Small slip indicating an assessment taken at HMS Excellent for Gun Layer Practice, 3. Two hand written letters from his commanding officer RN. Thanking him for his service, dated 30th October 1924 on original headed paper ‘HMS Winchester, Portsmouth’, 4. Reference Sheet (S-546/ D-398) A typed memo signed by Able Seaman Richard Puxty’s Commanding   Officer of HMS Vortingern. A request by Puxty’s brother Mr William Puxty inquiring when it may be suitable for his brother Richard to be discharged from the Navy.)
