Long Range Desert Group Commemorative Artwork

    THE MILITARIA DEALERS

    $760 (approx conversion from £625)

An exceptionally impressive piece of Long Range Desert Group Artwork designed and created to Commemorate the L.R.D.G in 2020 by Filani Macassey BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts – NZ) the daughter of JLP (Pat) Macassey who served with the L.R.D.G

Framed and measuring 1400m x 760mm, the top section in watercolour with hand embroidered features while the lower three panels are in lovely pastel watercolours.

I am very grateful to the artist Filani Macassey BFA, a charming and friendly lady who kindly provided an insight into her work along with the last three images:

“The material I utilise as a canvas is masi, a traditional hand beaten fibre made from the inner bast of the brousinetia papyrifera tree, which is also known as paper mulberry .

I source this material from two islands within the Fijian archipelago. The islands are Moce Island and Vatulele Island. Masi was traditionally used in villages for ceremonial purposes and also as a partition in certain buildings. It is still made today for similar purposes including fashion, accessories and within the tourism sector.

The artwork is inspired from dad’s photo album during his time specifically in Cairo with the LRDG. He was a navigator. I use embroidery also to bring about a more personal aspect to the materiality of this piece. My mum is from Kadavu Island Fiji, hence why I use masi. Depicting my dual heritage.”

Of the images she sent, the first shows her working on a community art project ( Kaiwaka War Memorial community hall 2021). The second shows her with her father in Fiji in the 1960s and the last shows Pat Macassey in Egypt while serving with the L.R.D.G.

A perfect background for any L.R.D.G collection the entire piece is in excellent condition and of course unique.

SHIPPING. UK buyers collection only or by other arrangement, overseas buyers, the artwork will be removed from the frame and sent rolled.
