    About this item

For sale is WW1 Victory & War Medals To G Brown Canadian Forestry Corps, With Original Photographs of Gilbert Brown serving with the Canadian forestry corps accompanied by his full 40 pages of service records digital scans.    This is a rather rare grouping, that belongs to a young Canadian boy who lied about his age when signing up. Upon enlisting he was really 16 years of age, however he had lied and said that he was 19 years of age. This wasn’t an uncommon practice, the official age to serve was 18 years of age, and there were many young people willing & wanting to serve. He first served with the Canadian forestry corps, completing tasks such as building railway tracks, clearing land and other labour related jobs. (This can be seen in some of the original photographs included in this medal duo). On the 27th December 1917 Gilbert was moved to England, and then fought in France for 5 months, before being discharged and sent back home for lying about his age.    The ww1 Canadian war medal and victory medal are engraved on the rim “2288496 PTE. G. Brown. C.F.C” these medals come with the original ribbons. These medals are also accompanied by six original ww1 photographs of Gilbert Brown and The Canadian Forestry Corps. But please note these photographs are over 100 years old and are in poor condition.    Gilbert Brown initially lied about his age to the Canadian army, and on his medical form. He wasn’t found out until a year later after he had served a year in France! He initially stated that he was born on the 22nd of May 1898 making him 18 years and 11 months upon enlisting and of legal age to serve. However the reason why he was discharged so soon after a years service was because the truth came to light, that he was actually born on 27 of May 1901 making him 16 years old, and not of legal age to serve. His occupation really was a school boy, but upon enlisting the first time he lied and said he was a swamper. His description upon being discharged was “Physically fit but underage, 16 years looks about 17.”   Gilbert Brown, was born on the 27th May in 1901 in Calgary Ottawa, Canada. Upon enlisting Gilbert’s description was described as; height 5ft 9 inches, complexion medium, grey eyes, brown hair. His religious believes were Presbyterian. His personal characteristics include “baseball” for Recreations, favourite reading “general fiction”, his intelligence “average”.   His trade upon enlisting was a “School Boy however he lied and said he was a “Swamper”. A Swamper is a labourer, especially one employed as a general assistant to a riverboat captain.    Gilbert enlisted on the 16th May 1917, aged 16 (which wasn’t known at the time)! Upon enlisting he joined the Southern Alberta, Forestry Company C.E.F. On the 24th December 1917, Gilbert was transferred to England and posted to the C.E.F. On the 27th December 1917, he was transferred to the 56th Coy, and was moved to France, serving a total of 5 months in France. On the 7th of March 1918 he then embarked back to Canada.    Gilbert was discharged from the Southern Alberta, Forestry Company C.E.F. On the 24th of May 1918 (because he had lied about his age).    Accompanying this medal Group is 40 scans of his service records. Upon payment please let me know if you would prefer digital scans or printed copies. Printed copies will cost an extra £5 as there is 40 pages! There is still plenty of research to be done on this medal duo.    A link to his service records can be found below:   https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?op=pdf&app=CEF&id=B1145-S046   These will be sent via royal mail special delivery and dispatched within two working days.
