About this item
A very nice WW1 South African Dispatch Case dated 1915. Not being a pattern I'm familiar with I'm assuming this Dispatch Case is destined for mounted units from the horizontal attachment strap mid-way down the Case, a feature typical of saddle-borne accoutrements.
The Case measures approximately 41 cm by 21 cm and is of a very high quality manufacture. Made in beautiful chest brown coloured grained leather it is in very condition overall, with all stitching strong and just two period at each side of the fold of the closure flap.
Inside, the Case features a looped holder for writing instruments, plus a small pocket, this perhaps to hold erasers or nibs and ink.
There are two brass-buckled attachment straps with one of these clearly maker marked and dated 1915 to one end and both the Case and straps are profusely stamped the letter “U” and "Broad Arrow” mark of South African military equipment.
In WW1 South African troops fought in France & Flanders, German East Africa, Egypt and Palestine.
A rare example and the first I have ever encountered.
