About this item
A really excellent matched pair of 1939 pattern leather anklets, clearly dated 1942.
The 1939 pattern leather equipment was introduced at the beginning of WW2 as an emergency measure as not enough webbing equipment could be produced. It saw limited used with second line British Army units in the early stages of the war as well as use with the Home Guard throughout the Second World War.
This equipment was made in two different colours, one very dark brown, almost black and a lighter tan. These gaiters are the latter of the two and the more sort after now by collectors.
Inside the gaiters the maker 'D. M. &S LTD' is stamped above the date of 1942. There is also a War Department WD mark present in both anklets as well as a large number 2 denoting the size. There is also a name written in ink which appears to be French.
The condition of these anklets is excellent as can be seen from the photographs. All the stitching is sound and the brass buckles and rivets are in good condition.
Overall, an excellent pair of 1939 pattern anklets which are clearly dated. These would suit the collector and re-enactor equally well.
