About this item
An original 1917 dated British Army map case MK 1A made by 'Haughton Butcher'.
This pattern of case was used during the Great War by a variety of different units. The main body of the case is made from wood which features a bi-folding design which functions via brass hinges. The outside edges feature a metal trim and there are small metal latches which hold the case together when folded in half. There is a metal hanging chain to each side and the front features a rubberised cotton document wallet which is trimmed in leather and fastens on a metal stud. A leather carry handle is present to the rear and there are also two leather tabs and metal buckles to which a shoulder strap could be attached.
The maker's name and date are stamped into the wood. Interestingly they clearly had a universal maker stamp which was missing the last number of the date, hence why the number 7 is slightly different to the rest of the date. There is also a War Department broad arrow marking to one the pieces of metalwork.
The map case is a small to medium size and is designed to be easily portable. It measures 12" x 15" when closed and 24" x 15" when opened.
The case is in good condition for its age and it displays well. There is no serious damage and overall it is a very good example.
A nice original Great War item which would make a great addition to a collection!
