    About this item

The British War Medal and the Victory Medal were two campaign medals awarded to British military personnel who served in World War I. These medals were established by the British government to recognize the bravery and dedication of individuals who contributed to the war effort.

British War Medal: The British War Medal, also known as the "Squeak," was authorized on 26 July 1919. It was awarded to officers and enlisted personnel of the British and Imperial forces who served in any theater of World War I between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. The medal features the bust of King George V on the obverse side, with the inscription "GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:" (George V, King of Britain, Emperor of India). The reverse side depicts St. George on horseback, trampling a shield representing the Central Powers, with the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919."

Victory Medal: The Victory Medal, also known as the "Wilfred," was authorized on 1 September 1919. It was awarded to all military personnel who served in a theater of World War I. The medal bears a winged figure of Victory on the obverse side, with the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION." The reverse side features the words "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" within a wreath.

Both medals were made of bronze and suspended from a ribbon. The ribbons of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal were the same, with a central watered stripe of rainbow colors flanked by stripes of red, white, and blue.
