It was awarded to officers and enlisted personnel of the British and Imperial forces who served in any theater of World War I between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. The medal features the bust of King George V on the obverse side, with the inscription "GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:" (George V, King of Britain, Emperor of India). The reverse side depicts St. George on horseback, trampling a shield representing the Central Powers, with the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1919."

Victory Medal: The Victory Medal, also known as the "Wilfred," was authorized on 1 September 1919. It was awarded to all military personnel who served in a theater of World War I. The medal bears a winged figure of Victory on the obverse side, with the inscription "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION." The reverse side features the words "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" within a wreath.

Both medals were made of bronze and suspended from a ribbon. The ribbons of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal were the same, with a central watered stripe of rainbow colors flanked by stripes of red, white, and blue.
