    About this item

An original Royal Air Force Group Captains peaked cap made by 'Gieves & Hawkes' in the 1980s.

This style of cap was worn by Group Captains for many years and is still in use today. It follows the same pattern as the standard RAF officer's cap but has a black patent leather peak which has gold bullion work to the top side. The body of the cap is made from RAF blue barathea wool and does not feature a stiffening band or wire to the crown giving it a soft 'crusher' look. An original Queen's crown cap badge is fitted to the front and a black chin strap is present.

Inside the cap is lined and features a leather sweatband. The reverse of this is marked with a curious message, possibly added by the original owner. The Gieves and Hawkes label is still present and bears two royal appointments along with the words 'Made in Great Britain'. This style of label was used by the Company during the 1980s.

The cap is a smaller size measuring at 21 3/4" which equates to a UK size 5 5/8.

The condition of the cap is good and it displays well. There are signs of wear and use and the cap is slightly out of shape when not on a display head. There are sections of stitching missing on the leather headband which is common to find with original caps and could be re-stitched although it does not affect the way the cap displays.

A very nice Falklands War era peaked cap from a prestigious maker!
