    About this item

An original 1945 dated RAF 'Shirt, Bush, R.A.F' as worn during the Second World War and in a tall size No. 11.

The bush jacket was a popular alternative to the more formal RAF Khaki Drill tunic and cellular cotton examples like this in particular. This was due to their lightweight, breathable nature which made them the ideal tunic in warm climates. Cellular cotton is often referred to as 'Airtex'.

The jacket features a full button front, large collar and long sleeves. It is fitted with brass Kings crown RAF buttons to the front and pocket whilst green-brown coloured buttons fasten the cuffs. The chest features pleated chest pocket with RAF style scalloped pocket flaps and large flapped pockets are located to the skirt. The interior of the tunic features a small patch pocket which originally fastened with a button although it has been removed. Evidence of where badges were originally fitted to the top of each sleeve is shown in the pictures and would suggest that this jacket was issued and worn. There also looks like there has been something stitched above the left breast pocket at some stage.

Inside the tunic the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It states the maker's name as 'Sloan Molyneaux & Co., Ltd. Belfast' and the size as No. 11. The 1945 date is present as is the War Department broad arrow marking. Details pertaining to size are also present and state a height of 6' 1" - 6' 2" and a 39-31" chest making this a rare larger size.

When laid flat the tunic measures -

    Chest - 22"
    Inside arm - 19 1/2"
    Outside arm - 25"
    Length - 30"
    Shoulders - 19"

The overall condition of the tunic is good with only limited signs of wear or age. It is a vintage item however so please take time to study the pictures.

A nice example of this pattern of RAF KD tunic in lovely condition and with a nice, clear label and in a hard to find size!
