Original 1952 Dated Civil Defence Austerity Pattern Battledress Blouse

An original Austerity Pattern Civil Defence Battledress Blouse dated 1952 and in a size No. 15.

This pattern was introduced during the Second World War as an economy measure and features exposed buttons, rather than the earlier fly-fronted type. This saved on materials and labour and was therefore quicker and cheaper to produce. 

The jacket is made from a dark navy blue serge wool and features black plastic buttons and a brass waist buckle. The interior features an indigo blue lining to the collar, cuffs, fly and waistband; with the same material being employed for both interior pockets. The lower portion of the right sleeve features a wartime economy printed set of long service chevrons of red on dark grey. 

The original label is present inside the jacket. The original designation was 'Blouses Civil Defence A.R.P. 57' although this has been crossed out with a later designation of 'Men's C.D. 20' being added to the top of the label. The size is stated as No. 15 which will fit up to 5' 10", 39-41" breast and a 36-38" waist. The makers name 'L. Harris LTD' is present as is the 1952 date and War Department broad arrow marking. 

The jacket is in good condition and displays well but does have various signs of age and wear. There is some limited damage and some repairs which I have detailed as best as I can in the pictures. Overall it is still a very wearable jacket but is by no means perfect. 

These austerity pattern jackets aren't common and it would make an ideal stand-in for a war dated example as part of a collection or for re-enactment purposes.
