    About this item

A good, late 19thC Bowie knife, of the type popularly private purchased and carried carried by officer's in the Boer War (1899-1902)

Marked "Wenborn Cutler Oxford" at the ricasso.

Reuben Wenborn is listed as a Cutler, living and working at 30 Cornmarket Street, Oxford, between 1891 and 1911.

The double edged blade of diamond section culminates in a spear point. The blade has been well sharpened over the years, and has small areas of dark staining in places.

The grip is of finely chequered ebony, held in place with four nickel silver pins. It also has a rectangular escutcheon panel, which is vacant. The crossguard is also of nickel silver.

The whole knife oozes quality. Overall length 9 and 3/4 inches. The blade measures 5.75 inches and was likely originally six inches when compared to the scabbard. No movement in the blade, crossguard, or hilt.

The simple leather scabbard is original to the knife, with simple tooled decoration, and an intact belt loop.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
