1796 Infantry Officers Sword

Regulation gilt brass hilt with decorated pommel and quillion. A reasonable amount of the fire gilt finish remaining. The folding shell guard still functioing well, with plenty of snap remaining. Silver copper wire grip in excellent condition.

32 inch single fullered engraved blade, in quite dirty condition, but with a decent amount of the original gilt finish shining through. I can see a cartouche to one side which either contains the makers marking, or the original owners initials. It will need some careful cleaning. The whole blade is grubby, and with light pitting its entire length.

The blade is fairly straight, but the lower section of the blade appears to curve downwards, which I have tried to illustrate in the pictures provided. It has obviously struck something at some point in it's lifetime, but in 30+ years I have never seen a blade bend/curve in such a way.

Some movement between blade and hilt, which would be helped by the addition of a leather washer, the original having perished.

A good entry level Napoleonic gilt officers sword. One of a pair which once hung above the fireplace in a country house in Dorset. The other also listed.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
