A hard to find original Royal Navy Able Seaman's Greatcoat in good condition and dated 1951.

Officially designated 'Class II Ratings Overcoat' this pattern of coat was introduced in 1937 and stayed in service into the 1950s. It is made from a thick, black coloured serge wool and features a double breasted front which fastens with black plastic King's crown Royal Navy buttons. The rear of the coat features a half belt which is adjusted inside using a metal buckle. This can be seen in picture 5 and is a notable feature of the non austerity pattern coat. There are also metal belt hangers to the rear which are intended to support webbing if worn.

The interior of the coat is partially lined and features a large hanging loop at the neck as well as a throat latch which is stored inside the coat but can be removed and attached to fit around the neck. The original label is also present to the interior and bears the maker's name of 'Hector Powe Ltd' to the top and the title of 'Seaman's Overcoat' is below this. The size is stated as 2 and there is a vocab number of 23312. To the very bottom of the label is the 1951 date.

The coat will suit around a 36" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

Chest -  20 1/2"
Inside arm - 19 3/4"
Outside arm - 26"
Shoulders - 16 3/4"
Length - 45"

The coat is in good condition for its age and it displays well. It is still very wearable with no serious flaws and only limited signs of wear and use. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A good example of this very hard to find pattern of greatcoat.
