A Scarce 1788 Heavy Cavalry Officers Sword

This example has been modified, by having its side bars removed, and the blade and scabbard shortened. The blade length is now 34 inches, and culminates into a hatchet point, more akin to its successor. Indeed, I suspect these modifications were done to keep the sword in service once the newer 1796 pattern was introduced.

Stylish faceted globular pommel, and grip ferrules, with a scallopped quillion on the slot hilt. Fluted knucklebow, with side bars removed. Fine ribbed shagreen grip with wide copper tape binding. Small movement in the lower grip ferrule, the rest of the hilt solid.

The single fullered blade with thin ricasso, and engraved for the first 12 inches with floral sprays, triumphal regalia, and stylish crowned GR cypher.

No signs of a makers marking, although my own attribution would be to Gill.

Housed in its original all steel scabbard, as opposed to the more commonly seen leather with steel mounts.  The diamond-shaped mounts are a particuarly nice feature.. I'm sure that it would originally had a shoe that was lost when it was shortened. This work has been done very neatly, and is period to the sword.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
