WW1 8th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers Memorial Bugle.

An emotive example used at the funeral of Lieut. Colonel Oswyn St. Leger Davies, who was Killed in Action on the 5th April 1918, whilst commanding the 8th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers.
The bugle by Boosey & Co bear a WD issue arrow and date 1915. The copper body is engraved:
“C.A.I.O Church, 21st April 1918, The bugle that sounded the last post and reveille at the memorial service to Lieut. Colonel Oswyn St. Leger Davies, commanding 8th Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action in France 5th April 1918'
The bugle remains in good condition.

Lieut. Colonel Oswyn St. Leger Davies was a pre war territorial serving with the 1/6th Manchester Regiment and it was this Regiment that he landed on the beeches of Gallipoli. Evacuated he was attached to the Lancashire Fusiliers taking command of the 8th Bn which fought in the Middle East before being posted to France. He was wounded at Gallipoli and for a second time in France with the 8th. In March he was on leave in England when the German’s great Spring Offensive began recalled to command his Battalion on the 21st April he led his men from the front on a counter attack and was hit in the spine, dying two hours later.
