For sale is a WW1 British Victory Full Sized Medal To a Wounded Soldier. This medal is engraved on the rim; “1367 Dvr. A. Ainley. R. A”. Arthur Ainley was born in Sheffield, and married to Margaret Ainley, where they lived at 9 Mark Lane in Sheffield. Arthur’s parish church was at Marie’s church in Sheffield. Arthur Ainley, enlisted into the British army on the 10th of august 1914, aged around 29 years old, in which he joined the British army at the rank of driver with his number being 1367. Upon enlisting he joined up to serve in the 3rd West Riding Brigade, which was a brigade inside the RFA (royal field artillery). During Arthur’s service, he was awarded a WW1 Victory medal, WW1 war medal, a ww1 1914- 1915 star, and Arthur was also awarded silver wound badge on the 4th February 1918 badge no (33/3/2) due to a severe illness which resulted in Arthur being discharged from the British army. Arthur served at home from the 10th of August -1914 until the 14th of April 1915. He then embarked for francs in the 15th April 1915 until the 20th of November 1915. And after contracting this illness Arthur was sent home (back to a British hospital m) on 28th November 1915 until 28th February 1916. Serving a total of 1 year, 268 days in the British army approximately 220 of those days in France. Unfortunately Arthur became ill during his service and became no longer fit enough to meet military requirements. This is what let to his discharge on the 28th of April 1916. His age on discharge was 33 years and 11/12 months. A little bit about 3rd West Riding Batteries, Royal Field Artillery to help you get a better understanding of Arthur’s journey during ww1: The West Riding Batteries, Royal Field Artillery were units of the Territorial Force. 1st Brigade had their HQ in Fenton Street, Leeds and was made up of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd (Leeds) West Riding Batteries and the Leeds Ammunition Column. 2nd Brigade had their HQ in Valley Parade, Bradford and consisted of the 4th (Bradford), 5th (Halifax), 6th (Heckmondwike) West Riding Batteries and the Bradford and Halifax Ammunition Column. 3Rd Brigade had their HQ at Norfolk Barracks, Sheffield and consisted of the 7th, 8th and 9th (Sheffield) West Riding Batteries and the Sheffield Ammunition Column. 4th (Howizter) Brigade had their HQ at The Drill Hall, Otley (opposite the Bus station) and was made up of the 10th (Otley), 11th (Burley and Ilkley) West Riding Batteries and the Burley and Ilkley Ammunition Column.
