About this item
For sale is a WW2 British SOE Escape & Evade Celluloid Style Prison Prisoner Of War Message Ring.
A prison ring is a type of plastic jewelry fashioned by hand in prisons, by working scrap plastic material, commonly celluloid items such as a toothbrush etc. Celluloid was historically a popular material since it could be heat bonded and glues were often less available. A common feature of prison rings were small photos mounted on the bezel. Upon further research/ reading an example of one of these POW rings can be found in the publication called “Evasion & Escape Devices Produced by MI9, MIS-X & SOE in World War II”. On page Page 83 the description for one of these rings are as stated: “An extremely rare example of the message rings produced by RAF 15 Squadron navigator Richard Pape in Stalag Luft VI the rings concealed messages written on thin paper strips sealed inside.” This prison ring is of the typical style of these SOE hidden message rings. We can guarantee that this ring was made in the 1930s to 1940s and is most likely of the prisoners wife or sweetheart, weather or not it is a genuine SOE item we can’t be sure, so please bare this in mind when bidding. This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.Additional Information
