    About this item

An original Royal Air Force Irvin Flying jacket dating from the early mid war period and in good condition.

This jacket is most likely an 'Irvin Suit' jacket and dates from approximately 1941 or 1942, based on the construction. The biggest indicator of age is the single vertical rear seam which is intersected by a parallel seam below the shoulders. Early war jackets only had the single seam and later war jackets have many more panels than this.

The jacket features a chromed leather outer shell which is in good condition and retains a good amount of its original finish. The reverse of this is sheepskin and the collar is made using a contrasting sheepskin which is typical of jackets made during this period. 'Lightning' branded zippers are fitted throughout and all work as they should and the original waist belt and nickel plated waist buckle are present andare in good condition. The large collar retains its chrome plated metal double 'dee' rings and the two hooks which the elastic collar strap attaches to are also present and again help to date the jacket. Under each arm are metal grommets which act as vent holes.

The jacket will suit around a tall 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 23"
    Inside arm - 23"
    Outside arm - 26 1/4"
    Shoulders - 20"
    Length - 24"

The jacket is in good condition and displays well. It displays very well with no serious flaws or damage and all the zips function perfectly. There are numerous small leather patches which have been expertly added and are only noticeable on close inspection due to their small size. There is a small area of missing sheepskin to the collar which is illustrated in picture 7. This is not always visible as with the fur pushed in one direction it covers the hole. There are general signs of wear and age but overall it is a very good jacket. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that it is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A nice original RAF flying jacket in a good size and in nice condition.
