About this item
An original British Army Officers green poplin shirt dating from 1959.
This shirt is typical of those made in the 1950s for officers in the British Army. It is made from a light green coloured poplin cotton and features a neckband collar which can be worn with a matching detachable collar. It has a plain barrel cuff which fastens with a single button and features a full button front. This style started to gain popularity during the Second World War, eventually replacing the earlier half fronted shirts in the post-war period.
There is a War Department acceptance stamp to the tail of the shirt which is surmounted by the letter 'X' which confirms 1959 as the year of issue - The last year acceptance stamps were used.
The shirt is a medium size and it is important to remember that they are designed to be worn reasonably loose so as to allow movement etc. It will suit around a 40" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -
Chest - 23 1/2"
Inside arm - 19 1/2"
Outside arm - 23 1/2"
Shoulders - 18 1/2"
Length at back - 35 1/2"
Collar - 15"
The shirt is in very good condition and does not appear to have seen much wear. It appears to be an unworn deadstock example and displays very well but please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age.
The shirt also comes with a matching collar which bears the size of 15 1/2 as well as the maker's initials of 'R & S' and the War Department broad arrow marking.
A nice original mid century shirt made from a lovely poplin cotton!
