    About this item

An original British Army officer's khaki drill shirt dating from the 1940s and in good condition.

This shirt is a private purchase example which is typical of those bought by officers during the Second World War whilst stationed overseas. The shirt is of half placket design which is pulled on over the wearer's head. This design was popular throughout the first half of the 20th Century in the UK before full button front shirts gained popularity in the late 1940s and into the 1950s. The shirt is made from a khaki coloured brushed cotton which is soft to the touch and it features two patch pockets to the chest, epaulettes at the shoulders and a spearpoint shaped collar - again typical of shirts from this era.

Inside the shirt the original label is still present and bears the maker's name of 'Cawnpore Mills Depot, Bombay' which means the shirt was manufactured in India, like many theatre made items during this period. The graphics on the label are typical of those encountered in WW2 period made Indian items. Below this label the original owner has added a name tag which reads 'E. W. Goodman'.

The shirt will suit a 36" chest depending on desired fit and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 21"
    Collar - 15"
    Shoulders - 16"
    Length at back - 31 1/2"

The shirt is in good condition with some signs of age and use. Overall it displays well and looks to be wearable but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which may have some small flaws commensurate with age.

A very nice original WW2 period shirt with a great label.
