    About this item

A very nice original British Army officer's collarless shirt which was made by 'New & Lingwood' during the Second World War for a Coldstream Guards officer.

This shirt belonged to Ashley Charles Gibbs Ponsonby who was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1941. He went on to serve with the 5th battalion during 1942 before going to Italy with the Second Battalion in 1943 where he was wounded. This was in February of 1944 whilst fighting at Monte Cassino where he was shot by a sniper. More can be read about him here - https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/8260200.sir-ashley-ponsonby-war-hero-became-queens-delegate/

Like much officer's clothing, this shirt is a private purchase rather than an issue item. Officer's were expected to buy their own uniforms and would have used their prefered tailor or similar. This shirt is one such example and is a very high quality example which is made from a soft wool which is a mushroom coloured wool and features fine stitching. The shirt has a half placket front which was the prevalent design during the first half of the 20th Century before full button shirts began to gain popularity in the 1950s.

Inside the collar the original label is still present and bears the name along with the place names of Eton and London. The original owner went to Eton which ties in well with this. He has marked his name in ink below this which reads 'A. C. G. Ponsonby'.

The shirt is a small size which will suit a 34" chest. When laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 20 1/2"
    Inside arm - 20 1/2"
    Outside arm - 24"
    Shoulders - 14 3/4"
    Length at back - 36"
    Collar - 14"

The shirt is in very good condition with only limited signs of wear and age. There are no serious flaws or damage and it displays very well. It is of course a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small issues commensurate with age. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing.

A very nice original shirt which is attributed to an officer who fought at Monte Cassino.
