    About this item

A rare original British Army Demob shirt dating from the 1940s and in good condition.

All servicemen who served with the British Forces during the Second World War were eventually demobilised. Part of the 'demob' process involved acquiring a set of clothing including a suit, hat, shoes, tie and shirts. This shirt is a scarce example of one of these shirts as is evident by the markings found inside the collar.

The shirt itself is typical of the 1940s being made from cotton and cut in the standard half-placket design which is pulled on over the wearer's head. The shirt features a striking striped pattern of blues and white which is classic for the period. A neckband collar is present to which a detachable collar can be attached and the cuffs are french cuffs which are designed to be worn with cufflinks.

Inside the neckband of the shirt all the original markings are still present. The War Department broad arrow marking is clear and confirms that this is an authentic Demob example. The makers initials of 'Mcl. H. M. & Co Ltd are present as is the collar size of 14 1/2". To the tail of the shirt more markings are present which again state the collar size and would suggest that this is a deadstock, unworn shirt.

The shirt is a smaller size and when laid flat measures -

    Chest - 21"
    Inside arm - 23 1/4"
    Outside arm - 25 1/4"
    Shoulders - 16 1/4"
    Length at front - 31"
    Length at back - 34 1/2"

It is important to remember that the cuffs are the french cuff style worn folder back meaning that approximately 2 1/2" need to be subtracted from the sleeve length if worn correctly.

The shirt is in good condition with no signs of previous wear and use. There is some minor staining and a small nick to the right sleeve, all of which is detailed in the pictures. The shirt displays extremely well but is a vintage item which has small issues commensurate with age.

A rare piece of 1940s menswear which would make an excellent addition to any WW2 or vintage collection.
