About this item
The German Merit Cross for War Aid (in German: Verdienstkreuz für Kriegshilfe) was a decoration of Nazi Germany during World War II. It was created on December 9, 1940, and awarded to German and non-German civilians who contributed to the German war effort.
The Merit Cross for War Aid was awarded in three classes: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Gold class was awarded to civilians who made exceptional contributions to the German war effort, while the Silver and Bronze classes were awarded to those who made lesser but still significant contributions.
The Merit Cross for War Aid had a similar design to other German Merit Crosses, featuring a Maltese cross with a central medallion depicting a German eagle surrounded by the inscription "FÜR KRIEGSHILFE" (for war aid). The reverse of the medal was plain, except for the date "1940" which was inscribed at the bottom of the cross.
Recipients of the Merit Cross for War Aid included individuals who worked in war-related industries, such as armaments factories or munitions plants, as well as individuals who contributed to war-related charities or other organizations. The decoration was also awarded to foreign civilians who supported the German war effort, particularly in German-occupied countries.
After the end of World War II, the Merit Cross for War Aid was banned in Germany and became a proscribed decoration. It is now considered a collector's item and is occasionally sold in militaria auctions.
