    About this item

The US M1860 Cavalry Saber was the standard cavalry sword of Union troops during the
Civil War, along with the heavier M1840 “Old Wrist Breaker”.  Captured examples were
also frequently used by their Confederate counterparts since their quality generally far
    exceeded that of Confederate-made examples.  It features a single-edged 34 ½" blade
with double fullers and spear point.  The ricasso is stamped "N.J./US/D.R./1864" on the
obverse and "AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/MASS" on the reverse.  Blade generally
smooth and bright with scattered scratches and age staining.  Brass 3-bar guard and
pommel with dark patina.  Leather wrapped grip with twisted brass wire wrapped grooves
(leather worn with some losses).  Iron scabbard with twin carry rings, showing pitting and
oxidation with a bluish-gray color.  Overall length 41", not including scabbard, 42 ½" with
scabbard.  Good representative example of this iconic cavalry sword carried by New Jersey
    troopers during the Civil War.
