1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Officers Sword

One of the best examples of a 1796 Light Cavalry officers sword I have owned for quite some time.

The scabbard marked for "Johnston, Sword Cutler, 8 Newcastle St, Strand". Joshua Johnston traded at this address, along with his father, from 1792 until 1805. Given the pattern date, this and the single marking of "Johnston" it seems safe to assume this sword was made between 1801 and 1805.

The spine of the blade is marked "JJ Runkel Solingen" along with the number "75". The number 75 in the same font also features on the scabbard, showing that this scabbard was made for the sword.

Stirrup D guard with slot for a sword knot, shield shaped langets and pronounced "ears". The leather bound with silver twistwire, the covering largely intact with some small areas of loss. Ferrule with lined decoration.

This example with an unmarked, plain 32 inch single fullered curved fighting blade. Retaining a good amount of original polish, with a small scattering of minor edge nicks.

Housed in its original scabbard with provision for twin hanging rings, the lower of which has been removed. The body of the scabbard in very good condition, no holes, splits or serious dents. The oval makers panel with clear lettering.

No movement between blade and hilt.

Generally very good, untouched condition. A light coat of preservative or varnish has been applied to the exterior metal at some time, which has helped to keep the sword in such good condition.
