About this item
A very fine Napoleonic 1803 Pattern British Infantry Officer's Sword by Osborn and Gunby.
Attractive lions head pommel with faceted backpiece, holding the stirrup guard in its mouth. A good amount of the original gil wash remaining. The grip appears to be of hardwood or horn, bound with twistwire, which is largely complete and in good condition. The blade is tight in the hilt, and there is no movement.
Curved 29.5 inch single fullered blade extensively frost etched for 2/3rds of its length. "Sword Cutlers to His Majesty Warranted" to one ricasso, with "Osborn and Gunby" within a banner above.
Osborn and Gunby were in partnership from 1811 until 1820.
Abover this is further foliate detail, triumphal regalia, and the crowned GR cypher. The other side featuring further decrotive swags, the royal arms, with motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense".
The blade with good amounts of original finish, and largely bright, with all engraving clearly visible. Minor areas of staining, and very small amounts of dark corrosion, most noticable on the blades spine, and areas of the cutting edge.
Sadly the scabbard is now absent.
A very good example of this most attractive of sword patterns.
