1822 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword

A very pleasing and untouched example of a Victorian 1822 Pattern Infantry officers sword, with 1845 pattern blade.

This example was made by E. Woods, of Bow Street, London. It likely dates between 1845 and 1855, as in 1854 the folding guard was discontinued. 

The sword is in lovely original condition, untouched, and uncleaned. It has the added bonus of carrying the original owners crest etched onto the blade, and with some diligent research, and given the short window of the swords production, it ought to be possible to offer an attribution as to the original owner.

The regulation 32 inch blade is in very good condition, being bright and clear with crisp etching, and only very minor spotting. It is etched with the makers details at the ricasso, the family crest, crowned royal VR cypher, as well as foliage and decorative swags.

The brass hilt is in similarly good condition, with only minor light abrasions, and not deformed in any way. The hinged folding guard is crisp, and functions as it should. The shagreen grip is also complete and in fine condition, being bound by its original twistwire.

The hilt is solid in the blade and free from movement.

Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. The scabbard could use a light cleaning, having some light surface rust in parts. It has taken on an attractive plum colour in parts. 

All in all an excellent example, and with the added bonus of research potential.
