    About this item

An very good Victorian Royal Navy Officers Sword, produced by the Wilkinson Sword Company of London.

The Wilkinson Proof Ledger page for this sword shows that it was proved on January 1901, and sold to "R.L. Hamilton, Royal Navy." Interestingly the top mount of the scabbard bears the name "P.F. King" so it would seem this sword served twice!

The sword is in good condition overall, likely refurbished during its service life, perhaps for its second owner? The grip with 99+% of its white shagreen grip remaining, bound with copper twistwire. The pommel and backstrap is formed as lion. The gothic 1827 pattern guard is of the larger solid type, and bears the crowned fouled anchor in a cartouche, and is free from serious dings and dents..

The 31 inch 1845 pattern single fullered blade carries the Wilkinson sword maker details at the ricasso, along with the "HW" proof slug surrounded by interlocking triangles. The blade carries the standard floral etching withing roped border, crowned anchor, royal coat of arms, etc. The blade is generally bright and clean. There is a small amount of old pitting on both sides of the blades point.

The sword is housed in its original black leather scabbard with brass mounts. The top mount has a shield bearing the Wilkinson makers details. It also has the safety catch, which functions as it should. Some minor marks, but good solid condition overall.

A pleasing Royal Navy sword with research potential to fully establish its provenance.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
