About this item
A very fine attributable Victorian Infantry Officers sword.
The guard of 'solid' 1822 pattern, with finely chequered gutta percha grips bound with copper twistwire.
Marked at the ricasso "Patent Solid Hilt" above the retailers details "Phillips&Co, 13 George St, Hannover Sqre, London". The proof slug is that of Pillin, a swordmaker known to have produced quality patent hilts on a par with Wilkinson. Serial number to the blades spine, along with a Centre of Percussion marking.
The blade carries a cartouche with the overlaid initials of "J.J.M." which will have been the original owner. A judicious search of the 1870's army list will likely turn up the officer in question, thus opening an avenue for research.
Standard foliate etching, and crowned VR cypher to both sides of the blade.
Blade length 32.75 inches.
Housed in its steel dress scabbard, with twin suspension rings.
Overall condition is very good indeed, the only flaw is some small movement to the grip ferrule. A scarce sword with research potential.
Strictly over 18's only.
