    About this item

An interesting and scarce 1895 pattern hilt which has been added to an earlier 1845 pattern blade to bring it up to the correct dress regulations.

The blade was retailed by Hobson and Son, at thier Windmill Street address, which they occupied form 1878/86, which provides a short window in which we can date this sword. From the proof slug, the sword was likely made by Pillin.

The guard and grip in good condition, almost 100% of the shagreen present, and bound with silver twistwire. Chequered backstrap.

The 32.5 inch blade is in good condition, with an etched panel containing the original owners overlaid initials, and "Connaught Rangers" the rest of the blade exhibiting the usual VR and floral etching. Minor pitting towards the blades point.

Housed in its steel dress scabbard with twin hanging rings.

Not easy to find any sword marked to the Connaught Rangers, but a particualry interesting combination of features, and with the added bonus of a researchable owner.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
