    About this item

Blade produced by "J.R Gaunt&Son Ltd, Late Edward Thurkle, London&Birmingham”

The 33 inch blade retains a bright polish, and is finely etched to both sides, with Crown over GRV cypher, with only minor staining.

Etched to the right hand side is ”Presented To Major.S.J. Tinner By Lieut.Colonel L.A. Dowie June 22nd 1918″.

The hilt is also in excellent condition, retaining the original knot, and the shagreen and twistwire grip remains fully intact. There is some movement between blade and hilt due to degradation of the washer, which would be an easy fix to this otherwise near perfect sword.

The brown leather field service scabbard is likewise in good overall condition, complete with Sam Browne frog. Frog retaining strap broken.

Brief research shows “Sydney Jonathan Tinner”, and “Lawrence Adam Dowie”, in the Canadian General List toward the latter part of the Great War, with Tinner's attestation papers available online (he attested in 1916).

Further research will be left to the new owner, and will hopefully reveal the reason behind the presentation of this fine sword.

    Strictly over 18's only.
