    About this item

The 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword of Lieutenant Eric Curwen Wilson, 4th (Hallamshire) Battalion The York and Lancaster Regiment.

Maker marked for Fenton Brothers Ltd, of Sheffield (Silversmiths to His Majesty's Government)

The regulation 32.5 inch blade is in very good condition, being bright and clear with crisp etching, with some scattered areas of spotting and darker stains. It is etched with the makers details at the ricasso, two etched panels on either side, one reading "4th (H) Y&L" and the other "E.C. Wilson" as well as the crowned royal GRV cypher, as well as foliage and decorative swags.

The nickel plated hilt is in good condition, with only minor light abrasions, and not deformed in any way. The shagreen grip is complete and correctly bound by its original twistwire, it has some staining but no losses.

The hilt is solid in the blade and free from movement.

Housed in its original Sam Brown leather field service scabbard. The scabbard could use a light feed and polish. It has one small area of loss at the throat, likely from contact wear.

E.C. Wilson was promoted 2nd Lieutenant 28th October 1914 (LG 16th December 1914) and later saw service in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Plenty of scope for further research.

All in all an excellent researchable example.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
