About this item
An 1822/45 Infantry Officers Levee Sword of the 5th Leicestershire Rifle Volunteers.
Marked at the ricasso "Hobson&Sons, Little Windmill St, London W." who were at these premises between 1878-1885.
The sword is quite grubby in appearance, although the 1822 pattern fixed guard retains good shape and looks to have a fair amount of its original gilt decoration remaining. The shagreen grip is complete, and bound with its original copper wire.
The 1845 pattern blade looks to have been coated in some form of varnish, although the etching is clearly legible underneath, and appears to be in good condtion.
The 31.25 inch blade etched with the strung bugle, and "5th Leicester Rifle Voltrs" along with the original owners initials which should open up an avenue to research the original owner.
Hobson's details and proof slug to either ricasso, with crowned VR cypher and foliate etching.
Housed in its steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. Some rust and minor dings/dents, but a good fit, and likely original to the sword.
Generally good untouched condition, I suspect the blade has been slightly reduced at the point from around 32 inches. A small amount of movement between blade and hilt. The whole will benefit from a gentle clean to improve its appearance, and well worth futher research into the original owner.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
