A fascinating and scarce William IV Pipeback Cadet or Ensigns sword.
Not to be confused with a boy's dressing up sword, this example is made for a teenage boy, probably between 12 and 16 years old. It is a scaled down, lightweight version of the standard 1822 pattern infantry officers sword of the period. It has gilt brass hilt with folding guard, twistwire bound shagreen grips, a 31.5 inch pipeback blade, which is etched with crown and foliage (although this is now quite faint) and a quill point. The blade and point have been service sharpened.
The sword is housed in its original black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts. There are no hanging rings, only a frog stud for wear on a cross belt, which is again correct for junior officers of this period. The scabbard is generally sound, although now broken in two, with signs of a previous repair.
A scarce sword, and only the second I have owned in 25+ years of collecting.
