    About this item

A very interesting Scottish Basket hilted Horseman's Backsword.

Grip of shagreen bound in silver coloured wire with turks head knots to top and bottom. Shagreen generally sound, some losses but largely intact. Wooden core visible below.

The basket hilt with fluted bars and scallopped side plates of typical "Glasgow" form. Decorated domed bun pommel.

Distinctive style 1 oval rein ring joining fixed between two fluted side bars. Pierced outer shields and side plates, rear and additional rear guards, and short wrist guard.

It is similar, although not quite identical to Plate F21, page 127 of Mazansky's "British Basket Hilted Swords".

Straight, single edged blade with a  length of 36.75 inches. Short top fuller with indistinct markings, I can make out an "N" and two "X" likely a Solingen made blade. Very sharp blade, back edge also sharpened 18 inches from the now slightly rounded point.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
