    About this item

A Civil Service Volunteer Rifles Officers Sword.

The 32.5 inch 1892 pattern blade retailed by "Hobson and Sons, 1,3&5 Lexington Street, Golden Square, London, W." although the sword itself is likely made by Pillin juding by the proof slug.

The blade is etched with the original owners initials "J.M.S." along with the regimental motto "Civil Service Vol Rifles" within a scroll. The blade is also etched with the usual floral designs, swags, the royal coat of arms, and the crowned cypher of King Edward VII.

The blade has been service sharpened. There are some areas of staining, and some old signs of previous cleaning, but no serious  rust or pitting to the blade, and all the etching is clear and legible.

The 1827 Pattern Rifle officers steel hilt is in good condition. with serious no dents or knocks, although there is some distortion. The exterior has been cleaned, and polished bright. There is some discolouration to the interior of the guard as one may expect, along with some fine scratches and old paint. Domed pommel with fully chequered backpiece. The grip is bound in shagreen and brass wire, and is free from loss.

The whole sword is completely as found, and would improve greatly from some sympathetic cleaning.

Housed in its steel dress scabbard, with twin suspension rings. This is a very tight fit. The whole scabbard is now stained and in need of a clean and polish.

Overall condition is good, both sword and scabbard appear to have been cleaned previously, although it would benefit from a further good clean and polish in order to bring it back to collectors standard.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
