Devon Volunteer Artillery Officers Sword

An uncommon example of an 1854 Pattern Officers sword, regimentally etched to the 12th Devon Volunteer Artillery.

Made for a mounted officer, the substantial 33.75 inch blade carries no makers marking, although the quality of etching is high, so it is likely produced by a member of the London cutlery trade. Proof mark with fleur de lis, single fullered blade etched with flaming grenade inscised with the numeral "12" surrounded by the regimental etching. The usual floral and geometric patterns, as well as the crowned VR. There is also a Centre of Percussion marking to the spine. 

The blade has some areas of old pitting, staining, and loss of finish, but is generally bright, and all the etching is clear. The brass hilt is in good condition, retaining its shape. Chequered thumb rest to the back piece and stepped pommel. The grip is bound in shagreen with copper twistwire, with some 90% remaining. 

Housed in its original scabbard with twin handing rings. Loss of original finish and light pitting over its entire length, but sound. There is a bend in the scabbard, but this does not effect the drawing/sheathing of the sword.
