    About this item

A good George V 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword

Regulation steel guard with crowned GV cypher, with chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is 95%+ complete, although slightly grubby, and retaining the silver twistwire binding. The hilt is fitted with its original sword knot, although in need of some attention.

This example retailed by "John Jones & Co. 6 Regent St, London" who operated at this address and using this name between 1894 until 1912. This would narrow the date range of this sword to 1910-1912, making it an early, pre WW1 George V example.

The 32.5 inches blade etched the makers details and proof slug to the ricasso, with foliate decoration, vacant panels, the Royal coat of arms and crowned crest of George V. Signs of service sharpening, which would again confirm that this sword was in service in 1914 when the famous sword sharpening order was given.

Housed in an attractive steel mounted leather field service scabbard. Minor scuffing to the body, some "folding" at the drag.

Overall condition is good, some light rust, pitting and old staining, particularly towards the blades point. Both hilt and blade would benefit from a gentle clean and polish.

An interesting early George V sword.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
