    About this item

Early 20th Century Japanese Naval Officer's British Made Dress Sword.

It appears to be a lightweight variation of the model 1883 naval dress sword that was adopted around 1896 although not regulated by an official pattern.

I would estimate this example as dating to circa WW1, as there was a Japanese naval attache and staff in present in London throughout the war to coordinate naval strategies and shipping of supplies. It was likely produced for one of them.

Plain 26.5 inch, single edged blade with central fuller bearing an etched panel with the makers details "Fisher & Hart. Court, Naval & Military Tailors.  23 George St. Hanover Sqre. W".  (Fisher and Hart were at this address from 1896 until 1931)

The hilt of gilt brass, floral decorated guard, with folding guard, floral decorated pommel and backstrap.  Shagreen covered grip with twistwire binding.

Contained in its black leather scabbard with gilt brass, floral decorated mounts.  Sword is a good tight fit and can be stiff to withdraw when fully sheathed. Being UK made, I suspect it would originally have had a leather washer.

Good condition overall, minor staining to the blade. Some small movement between hilt and blade, again, likely due to the missing leather washer. Likely a unique sword.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
